From Chaos to Control through Meditation
Hi so today I want to take you through a meditation exercise that I often use in session with my clients and this activity is
There are a lot of different techniques that can help with this. Regular mindfulness activities, like this one, can help, both in the short and long term. Other methods include learning how to put the thoughts in a safe place until you are ready to deal with them, using thought stopping techniques, and identifying the true cause of the thoughts. Therapies designed for trauma, such as EMDR, brainspotting, and Internal Family Systems, are all designed to help with the integration that is necessary for healing.
Your mind is working hard to heal from what has happened. Understanding and incorporating the past into a solid narrative of your life is how it finds healing. In order to do this, it keeps bringing those memories to mind, trying to make sense of it. This is where therapy can help.
It is common for our brains to block the memories of extremely overwhelming events in our lives. This is a protective mechanism, which has helped you survive. It is likely that therapy will unlock at least some of these memories, but you don’t need to remember all of them to heal. The mind is a beautiful and powerful thing. It will bring back memories as you develop the resources to handle them.
Safety comes from knowing that you have the protection you need. I work with my clients to find ways to get protection and safety from both others and themselves.
Much like racing thoughts, your brain is working hard to heal, and it can’t heal without bringing the memories up. Therapies designed for trauma, such as EMDR, brainspotting, and Internal Family Systems, are all designed to help with the integration that is necessary for healing.
I don’t know the exact reasons why. What I do know is that it wasn’t because you deserved it. In fact, it wasn’t about you at all. It was not your fault. You deserved to be treated with kindness, love, and respect.
I’m not a betting woman, but I’d wager that you have been told how undeserving you are of any good things a lot in your life, or at least in your childhood. Questioning this message and finding the truth about who you are is a key piece of the work that we will do.
I describe what sessions with me look like above. If you have any other questions or concerns about it, please contact me!
